Excitement was in the air as 59 eager students from Oliver Plunkett’s National School set off on a special visit to Old Mill Wind Farm. From the moment they climbed onto the bus, there was a buzz of anticipation, with chatter about the towering turbines they were about to see up close. The visit was not just a fun outing but also a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about renewable energy and how wind power is shaping the future.

Upon arrival, the children were warmly welcomed by Robert, the site manager from Optinergy, who captivated them with an engaging talk about the wind farm and the power of turbines. He explained in simple yet fascinating detail how the giant blades harness the wind’s energy and convert it into electricity. His interactive session encouraged the students to think critically, and their enthusiasm shone through as they eagerly asked questions about everything from the mechanics of the turbines to the impact of wind energy on the environment.

Following Robert’s talk, Sean took over with an exciting demonstration of the safety equipment used on-site. The highlight for many was seeing the harness that allows workers to climb the turbines—an essential part of maintaining these impressive structures. Some lucky students even had the chance to try on the harness themselves, an experience that sparked plenty of giggles and wide-eyed wonder. Safety is a key aspect of working with wind energy, and the children left with a newfound appreciation for the skill and care involved in managing a wind farm.

The adventure continued as the children explored the site, getting a closer look at the base of the towering turbines. Seeing them up close gave the students a whole new perspective on their scale and engineering. To celebrate their engagement, a special competition was held, with prizes awarded for the best questions, most engagement, and best behavior. The winners were delighted to receive a “Make Your Own Turbine” kit, a fitting reminder of the day’s learning and excitement.

This visit was extra special because it also included children from the Solas Autistic School, which is part of Oliver Plunkett’s N.S. The inclusive nature of the day ensured that every child had the chance to learn, ask questions, and participate in the activities. It was heartwarming to see all the students exploring, engaging, and experiencing the wonders of renewable energy together. With memories made, prizes in hand, and a new appreciation for the power of wind, the children left Old Mill Wind Farm with their curiosity sparked and their imaginations soaring! 💨
